Presentation Pro Tip 013: Focus on Your Message
Capturing Immediate Boardroom Attention by Leading with Your Big Idea
Capturing Immediate Boardroom Attention by Leading with Your Big Idea
The First 30 Seconds: Hooking your audience immediately by stating your big idea before presenting credentials.
Presenters frequently fall into the trap of talking about themselves and their organizations rather than focusing on their core idea.
In a recent Zoom presentation, the host gave a long verbal introduction on top of an emailed biography. The presenter then spoke at length about their own background before reaching the actual topic—spending 12 minutes talking about themselves before delivering any real content.
Even after the presentation officially began, the speaker repeatedly circled back to their personal credentials.
Audience attention peaks at the very beginning of a talk. When presenters open with exhaustive resume summaries, credentials, or internal meeting backgrounds, audiences immediately tune out and multitask.
If someone in the room wants your complete background, they will look it up in advance. If you must discuss your personal background, save it for the very end of your talk.
To capture immediate focus, your first words must state your "Big Idea"—the single key takeaway you want your audience to remember.
Instead of reading a long biography, open your presentation with a clean, two-sentence formula:
"I am Kevin Holliday, and I am thrilled to be speaking with you today. I want to tell you how our widgets will enhance your life."
1. "I am Kevin Holliday..."
This is the only introduction you need. State your name clearly and skip the resume summary.
2. "...and I am thrilled to be speaking with you today."
This establishes an immediate human connection, demonstrating that you respect and value the audience's time and attention.
3. "I want to tell you how our widgets will enhance your life."
Just like a high school essay thesis statement, state your primary outcome right upfront. The opening seconds of your talk are your single best opportunity to implant your core message into their minds.
If someone else is introducing you, request that they cut your biography to the absolute bare minimum or waive the verbal intro entirely. Say your name, express genuine appreciation for their attention, and state your big idea immediately.
